Card, cash or both – how to use your Danske account when you’re outside the UK.

Take your Danske Bank cards with you for more flexibility and peace of mind. You don’t need to tell us when you're leaving the UK – just use your PIN when you arrive. This will activate your card in that country and lets us know it’s you using the card.

We’ve got you covered:

  • If your card is lost or stolen, you can block it in seconds on the Mobile Banking App or call us on +44 800 032 4368, any time, any day. This phone number is also detailed on the back of your card.
  • If your card is declined when you’re away, call us on +44 800 032 4368.
  • We’ll keep an eye out for anything that looks fraudulent and we’ll text you if we spot any suspicious card transactions. Please check we have your most up-to-date mobile number. If you use secure mail, please allow 48 hours for your number to update.
  • When you come back home, use your PIN to make your first purchase to reactivate your card in the UK.

Going to the USA?

Although the USA has started to roll out a chip-and-PIN system across the country, it’s not yet used by all stores. Most commonly, the insert-and-sign method is used, so you should be prepared to insert your card and then sign the printed slip given to you by the store. If you’re asked for your signature instead of your PIN when you arrive in the States, you can activate your card using the Mobile Banking App, your eBanking or contact your local branch.

If you’re using our mobile app

  1. Log on.
  2. Tap ‘Cards’ at the top of your screen.
  3. Tap the card you want to authorise.
  4. Select ‘Card settings’.
  5. Select ‘Using your card abroad’ choose where the card can be used.
  6. Scroll down the page to the list of destinations abroad.
  7. Toggle ‘North America’

If you're using eBanking

  1. Log on
  2. Click 'Cards & currency'
  3. Select ‘Card Overview’
  4. Click on the card you want to activate
  5. Select ‘Where you can use your card’
  6. Scroll the list of destinations on the page
  7. Toggle ‘North America’

Cash

As a Danske Bank customer you can:

  • pre-order foreign cash through eBanking to collect at a branch of your choice (there’s a cost of £3)
  • Note: Customers with a Danske Choice Plus or Prestige account are not charged commission on foreign currency

    Notes to this table:

    1. You will not have to pay the non-sterling transaction fee set out above if you have chosen to pay in sterling. When you pay in sterling (instead of the relevant foreign currency) the merchant or the cash machine operator will convert the currency using their own exchange rate. This can be more expensive than paying in the foreign currency. You should always check the exchange rate and the amount of any fees before you make a payment or withdrawal in sterling while abroad.
    2. We apply the non-sterling transaction fee by adjusting the Danske Bank Card Exchange Rate (UK)
    3. The amount of the fee will be shown on your statement.
    4. For cash withdrawals, we will charge the non-sterling transaction fee at the time the withdrawal is applied to your account. The amount of the non-sterling transaction will be taken off the available balance on your account immediately, but the balance will not take account of the fee described above. The amount that is actually taken from your account will depend on the Danske Bank Card Exchange Rate (UK) on the date that the transaction is processed. The fee will be shown separately on your statement. The amount withdrawn could be taken from your account several days after the date you made it.

    Credit and debit cards

    Please note that daily withdrawal limits will apply (the daily limit will be the local currency equivalent of your sterling daily limit). Daily cash machine withdrawals operate from midnight to midnight CET (Central European Time).
