Which? Recommended Provider - current accounts

We’re proud to have been named a Which? Recommended Provider for current accounts.

For parents and legal guardians...

  • eBanking is available from age 11, with parent / legal guardian consent required for customers under 16.
  • Our Mobile Banking app and wearable device apps are designed for customers aged 13 or over.
  • For children under 16, a parent / legal guardian must consent to the debit card being used in shops and online. A spending limit can be placed on these payments.
  • This account has no overdraft.
  • The account is opened in the name of the child.
    • for children aged 8 - 10, the parent / legal guardian is automatically given access to the account until the child turns 16.
    • for children aged 11 - 15, the parent / legal guardian can ask to be given access to the account until the child turns 16, when applying.
  • Arranged or unarranged overdrafts aren't available on this account, so it's important that the account holder has enough in the account before trying to spend money from it.

When you turn 18, we will change the account to a Danske Freedom current account. You won't need to do anything, and your account number and regular payments will stay the same.

Ready to open a Danske Discovery account?

Apply online

If you are a parent or legal guardian of a child aged 8 - 17, or if you are aged 16 or 17, you can apply for a Danske Discovery account online.


Parents and legal guardians for a child aged 8 - 17

A parent or legal guardian can apply online for a child aged 8 - 17.

The account will be in the child's name.

Children aged 11 - 17 will be set up for eBanking and, if you provide their email address, paperless statements. If you do not want your child to have eBanking, apply by phone or in branch instead.

Before applying, have one of the following for your child ready to photograph or upload:

  • Birth or adoption certificate
  • Valid passport
  • Valid full or provisional UK driving licence
  • Valid full ROI or EU driving licence

You may also need to provide proof that you are the child's legal guardian.

We'll try to confirm your identity electronically. If we cannot, we'll contact you for proof.

To apply online, you'll need two different documents:

  • one to prove your identity
  • one to prove your address

(As you've selected 'Valid Full or Provisional UK Driving Licence as your 'Proof of identity', it means you can't select this option for your 'Proof of address' below)

Unfortunately, if you are unable to provide documents from the list to meet our identification requirements, you cannot apply online.

However, your parent or legal guardian can apply online on your behalf by selecting the parent / legal guardian option above. Alternatively, you can make an appointment in one of our branches to open an account.

8 - 15 year olds

You can open an account in any branch. A parent / legal guardian will need to come with you when you open your account and you’ll need to bring:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of your parent / legal guardian's identity and address.

16 - 17 year olds

You can open an account in any branch. You don’t need to be accompanied by a parent / legal guardian. You’ll need to bring:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of address (such as a letter from your school or college) or any of the examples provided on our Become a Customer page.
