Using your card

Using your card

Taking care of your cards, PINs and other security information is essential to help prevent fraud and protect your card account. The following tips and information will help you to protect your card details and allow you to use your card safely and securely

  • Do not let anyone else use your card, and do not tell anyone else your PIN.

  • Danske Bank will never ask you to tell us your PIN. If you are in any doubt about whether a caller is genuine or if you are suspicious about them, take their details and call us.

  • If you change your PIN, you should choose your new PIN carefully.

  • You will find the UK Finance website www.financialfraudaction.org.uklink to external site a helpful guide on what to do if you suspect card fraud.

  • We can monitor the use of your debit and/or credit card, and may contact you or suspend your debit and/or credit card (without contacting you) if we believe that the security of your card may have been compromised.  We recommend that before you travel abroad, you contact your Danske Bank branch to advise them that you may be using your debit and/or credit card outside of the UK.

  • We are able to advise you about alternatives to ‘chip and PIN’, which are available if you are unable to use a PIN due to a disability or medical condition.

  • With Danske Bank’s Debit Mastercard and Mastercard Standard credit card you will need a PIN to carry out transactions at terminals with chip readers. These are commonplace in most outlets today however if you use your card at a terminal without a chip reader, your signature will be required instead of the PIN.

  • When you use a Danske Bank Debit Mastercard or Mastercard Standard credit card abroad, the amount will be exchanged into your domestic currency. The Danske Bank Card Exchange Rate (UK) will apply, adjusted to take into account our fee (for full information on our fees see our Fees and Service Charges Explained leaflet).

  • Sometimes when you are abroad the merchant may offer to apply an exchange rate which they determine. This means that you can pay in your domestic currency. This rate may often be higher than the Danske Bank Card Exchange Rate (UK). In these circumstances, you should check the exchange rate the merchant is using.

  • A genuine bank or organisation will never contact you out of the blue to ask for your electronic signature details or to move money to another account. Only give out personal or financial details to use a service that you’re expecting to contact you, that you’ve given your consent to and that you trust.
